My understanding is that there are maybe 9 or 10 big retailers who deal directly and others who buy indirectly. I think I heard that one of the retailers also sells wholesale to these smaller companies. But by revenue the big guys do almost all of the volume.

You are certainly right on the complexities of the retail business. Mark up, mark down, some funny ownership value that is not what the retailer paid for the goods but is an artificial number related somehow to accounting for markdowns... my secret decoder ring exploded about 10 minutes into the discussion. I will say that I could easily have misunderstood some of the terms.
