McMannis - Re: "Does a secretary need anything more than a
Celeron?"

MIS managers have been advised to withhold new PC purchases for secretaries until Intel releases its new Secretron CPU, with embedded "white out" features, on-board watch-dog timers for automatic "Coffee-break" alerts and text-to-speech conversion for standard expressions such as "I don't have time for that now" and "Can't that wait until tomorrow?".

Jim, Does a secretary need anything more than a Celeron?

Probably not. But most corporations are standardizing on Windows NT. Even Microsoft has made it clear Windows 98 is better suited for the home. Windows NT may be overkill, but in the long run it is cheaper for the MIS team to have one OS whenever possible. I guess you could run Windows NT on a Celeron if you beefed it up a bit. My understanding is Windows NT currently requires 64MB Ram and it is still growing.

Are you saying that Corporations don't want to say <sic> money? Numerous boxmakers have announced Celeron systems for corporate buyers. Compatibility guaranteed and the corporation gets a break on the price...Usually under $999. Does a secretary need anything more than a Celeron?

No doubt, some corporations want to save money. Others want to spend their entire budget to make sure they get 10% more for equipment next year.

And yes, any secretary worth his/her salt needs more than a Celeron. Multi-tasking is very important. Running multiple programs like Word, a fax client, an email client, a rolodex client. Some use desktop publishing software, some do accounting, etc. If you want to sell Celeron's, give them to the executives. But of course, the executive needs a machine he/she can brag about, and that ain't the low end.

It's hype. A Fad. One step above an NC. They will become a niche, and I hope INTC sells bucket loads of chips, but I'm not holding my breath.
