>>AOL

I think that is the question of the day. I've been wrestling with it.

First of all, nothing really changes short-term competitively for AOL. This merger will take time, and the build-out will take much more still. In the meantime AOL rolls on.

It has also proved wrong to underestimate AOL's management. They know that broadband is coming, and they must be facing it. Their Internet gateway is becoming more important, and by the time all these wonderful broadband dreams come true (which today's developments ensure) AOL will be a real presence on the Internet itself.

The RBOC's are going to get serious about xDSL now. They have dragged their heels on xDSL because it compromises their high-margin business, but AT&T has forced their hand. They will probably wholesale xDSL access through ISP's, and AOL is the biggest ISP by far.

Meanwhile AOL's business prospects are great. Commerce is accelerating, and membership is growing. I don't think AOL is a sale.

What changed today is the telecom equipment area. The prospect of providing high-bandwidth to the edges of the Internet is an awesome undertaking and will compound equipment demand quadradically across the entire network. The Networking Index (NWX) broke out in stunning fashion above last October's high today.
