I agree. The timing of writing the calls is key. The best time to do it is at peaks in volatility where a stock is going into a trading range at a top. There's a good liklihood of not getting called out in that instance, or if you do, it won't be by much and you can simply buy back in for the same strike price or close to it--or better yet lower than the strike price on a dip.

Covered calls work much better on stocks with less volatility.
Or use them as a hedge against other optiond.(Not my style)
Instead of cc's I would look at LEAPS on Compaq(are there any?)
