Subject: Recommending a box maker.

Spots I know you don't place much faith in PC Magazine but in the July 1998 edition of PC Magazine they rated 25 desktop and 15 notebook vendors for service and reliability. They gave Dell, Hewlett-Packard and IBM top rating in the desktop category and Dell and Gateway top rating in the notebook category.

Sean Smith recommends Dell, Gateway, and Micron Electronics to his friends. See post 1538 Message 5010699

Full Disclosure: Except for an XT I have never bought a computer from any of these companies.

Hey Spots,

check out my post to zeus on this subject. For relatives the answer IMO is never to build one for them. Far too many headaches and phone calls.... Honestly: dell, gateway, and micron all build good machines and provide good (relative) support of their products. They don't go ballistic with tons of BS software like compaq, acer, and packard bell. Local shops are often good for these users but I can never get past the cheap components they often use. All of these have factory outlets where you can buy left over machines and brand new ones that were sent back in the 30 day period for a discount. I have bought 6 returned microns in the last 6 months for friends and all have been very happy and don't ever call me to complain.

Sean

I agree with Sean on this (getting a major company box for relatives) 100%. Otherwise, there will likely be no end of headaches, calling with questions, etc. (some of which seems to happen in my case even when they do get a major box.

I have had very good luck recommending Gateway and Micron in the past.

Good luck,

Dave
