Lynn,
Interesting story. I too was in CompUSA last night to replace my Wife's stolen notebook with my wife. They had two Compaq models out. Not very many models of other notebooks. To make a long story short Toshiba with an Intel 266 chip, 4.2 hard drive, 24x CD drive combined with a 3.5 floppy (very compact arrangement.) $2,100. She will probably pick it up today. Being married to a Compaq share holder means nothing when she buys laptops. Salesman said they are expecting more new Compaq models in the near future. She waited three weeks for WIN98, and is tired of waiting. She wants a replacement now.

>>after one frustrating evening at one CompUSA in New England<<

I've had similar experiences with Radio Shack and Office Depot. Compaq exec have not only dropped the ball, but they are sitting on it and it's going flat.

This is not to say that things won't improve, but CPQ is looking more and more like a big mismanaged company that is so oversized that large sectors go out of control because no one is watching or cares.

Management might be focusing on the corporate side, but I can't see that. Judging from the retail trade (and the earnings) those running Compaq are out of touch.

Lynn, I had the same impression and posted about it a few weeks ago. It was obvious to me CompUSA does not try to sell Compaq as hard as they sell other computers. At least at the store I went. Compaq machines were not displayed as well as others such as HP's. (BTW, I think Compaq machine boxes are not very clean-cut or are even ugly). I wonder if it is because they get less money from selling Compaq machines, or they just don't like Compaq machines? I wonder why and if Compaq is aware of this and do something about it. If only their sales people care as much as we share holders about their selling.

CompUSA does not sell Proliants or DeskPros. Why should they? They are a consumer oriented company and thus they sell Compaq's consumer products...Presario's. Besides as a consumer why do you need a server? Furthermore, DeskPro's are configured for corporate users...meaning they usually don't all the cool gizmos that we consumers enjoy.

Besides all this...I too have noticed that CompUSA does not push Compaq products. They seem to push CTX and HP's.

From Microsoft thread: Lousy PC sales for CPQ. Better for HP.
====
Message 5035986
A research firm tonight on CNNfn said PC sales were lousy... CPQ being the worst of the lot. Low single digit growth for May- June period, they will release their numbers Monday. HP was the best of the lot.

Didn't I mention the signs I saw in the store a few weeks ago? Did CPQ know what's going on and was it really working their problems as we were told? Is it because their ineffective sale forces or theirs less competitive products? Do they have a clue? Do you? No more inventory excuses please.
