Higher resolution = more real estate, often blank. 1024 x 768 on a 17" is a good compromise.

SI seems to be mostly optimized for 640 x 480.

You might have a utility that will let you switch resolution on the fly, but my experience is that they do more harm than good.

To shift the main SI screen over to the right (and fill more of the screen), you might want to try turning the navigation panel on. To do this, click on Preferences:Options

SI is increasingly optimized for 600 x 800 resolution, which is the most common configuration (more than 80% of users). It works well on 480x640 and 768x1024.

I imagine if you set your resolution that high, you did so because you like to do a lot of things at once....a lot of people with these huge screens shrink their browser to take up the left side of the screen (SI works really well in 1000h x 600w), then use the other half with another browser for monitoring quotes, news, etc...
