Ahh Doug, my hat in hand I must tell you how I have strayed. In rereading the post that prompted my response I find I totally misread what you clearly wrote and I hereby withdraw my remarks with much humility and my apology.

By the way, I much prefer the western way of soiling hankies rather then noisy and theatrical hawks which are most often onto the sidewalk as opposed to spittons which are no where found anymore. But to the scrupulous Chinese who is not so easily offended by such sights and sounds, and whom regards expectoration as a means of ridding the body of harmful stuff, I can see why saving the objectionable material seems odd to an extreme. <G>
