The write precomp circuits I have seen have all been implemented in analog. The National part you gave the link to doesn't actually do the precomp, it just tells the read channel whether or not precomp needs to be done. This is more clear if you look at the pin descriptions of Pins 6-7 in the datasheet. Maybe it is possible for precomp to be done digitally, I don't know. My book on magnetic recording channels is at work, and unfortunately it's not something I deal with every day, so any in-depth technical discussion will have to wait. Maybe we're getting too far off topic here anyway...

By the way, what did you do with IBM, if you don't mind saying? I know they were the initial developers of PRML. What does a DASD engineer do? I'm interested in what you worked with, but on the other hand, I want to keep my privacy, so feel free to do the same.
