Personally I think Amazon should accept webvertising. Do something to take advantage of that huge visitor list.

Outside of sale within Washington, which I seem to recall doesn't have a sales tax, Amazon has no obligation to collect other state's sales taxes.>> IF BARNES & NOBLE ALSO SELLS OVER THE INTERNET, HOW DOES THAT GIVE AMZN AN ADVANTAGE? SEE DAN, I THINK AMZN HAS A PROBLEM. THEY AREN'T UNIQUE ENOUGH AND THEY DON'T HAVE THE CAPITAL TO TAKE THIS BATTLE TO THE COMPETITION.....THEY MIGHT BE FIRST, BUT THEY HAD BETTER FIND A WAY TO SURVIVE THE CAPITAL SHORTFALL WHILE GOING HEAD TO HEAD W/ THEIR COMPETITION....I'M NOT SO SURE B&N WILL WIN THIS BATTLE, EITHER...WHAT HAPPENS IF WMT GETS AMBITIOUS IN THIS WAR?....THE GUY WITH THE UNLIMITED RESOURCES IS MORE LIKELY TO SURVIVE. Wrongggggggg. King County, which includes the entire Seattle metropolitan area, has combined state & local tax rates ranging from 8.2% to 8.6%...ditto for Snohomish County, which is East/NE of King County.

The Washington State sales tax rate is 6.5%; then the local city or unincorporated county areas add anywhere from .5% to 1.7%..Naturally Seattle, being a bastion of people generous towards the government, sports the highest sales tax rates in the State of WA...

Oregon has no sales tax, but it has a state income tax, which ranges from 7% to 9% (not positive on these rates, as I'm an accountant in Washington). Washington has no state income tax.

Jonathan, That brings up an interesting competition issue. B&N and other outfits that
have brick and mortar operations in a state are obligated to collect sales tax on mail
order sales to that state. Outside of sale within Washington, which I seem to recall doesn't
have a sales tax, Amazon has no obligation to collect other state's sales taxes.

Now, the individual buyers are obligated to file a "use tax" return with their state and
pay the tax, but how many people do you know that are even aware of this, much less
comply with the law? -vbg-

So this should give AMZN a bit of an edge when cut throat pricing starts.

Dan,

This has been bantered about a month or two ago. The conclusion is the States will eventually consider Amazon.con a sufficient nexus so each State may collect the sales tax. The States are not going to give up that much sales tax revenue.
