I know a skilled auto assembler at GM who has been working there for over 10 years and make $60K+. This person doesn't even have a college degree. The point is that the auto and semi businesses are very different. A cap of $100K for most process is all a semi company would pay for. There are plenty of jobs for a process engineer since there are so many fabs. I would think getting a good position as an automotive engineer with good pay is hard to come by.

A good manager with technical and management skills deserves higher pay because they coordinate so many people. Their decision outcomes can have many times the effects as one engineer. The problem is that most of the managers are incompetent. They get there by kiss-assing their bosses. The good ones will find ways to move up or leave the company to the better one. The bad ones with no skills and get stuck where they at. What can I say? It is life.

VTSS is a very well managed company. They seem to have the products that all the big boys want over ANAD and AMCC. I am sure ANAD and AMCC will find way to change that.

You seem to be impressed by the 300MHz socket 7. Next month AMD will roll out their 333MHz systems in big OEMs boxex. By August you will see some 350MHz boxes and by late September you should see some 400MHz boxes. Socket 7 is not yet dead! People have yet to show me the advantages of going to slot1. Socket 7 can match slot 1 in most benchmark speed for speed. Slot1 is a "nice idea" but not an "cost-effective" solution because it is yet to blow away the socket7 data.
