You mean peyote I think -- mesquite is used in barbecues. This country stole the land from the Native Americans by means of extreme violence, and then, a few years ago, the DEA decided that Native Americans had no right to freedom of religion by making laws prohibiting peyote. The natives of the Americas had been using peyote in religious rituals since before 500 BC. I like the bumpersticker I saw at a tribal pow-wow, that read, "Sure you can trust the U.S. government --- just ask any Indian!"

Peyote is actually getting to be an endangered species -- the peyote cactus grows extremely slowly and has been harvested at a greater rate than it can sustain.
