OFF TOPIC You are right....I meant peyote. You know, when I was a little kid, it bothered me about the way the Indians had been treated. And the shameful history of how the Cherokees were treated in the East and forced to go to Oklahoma still bothers me. These Cherokees were not "savages" by any means. They had actually enough trust in our system that they hired representatives to go before the courts to fight for their claim of the lands in Georgia, I think it was. Those lands had been given to them by treaty. The resulting "Trail of Tears" still makes me sick to my stomach and makes MY eyes fill with tears. HOWEVER, perhaps I am wrong, but I do not think that would have happened today. As hard as it may be to believe, I think that overall humans are evolving. There are still many, many abuses, both here and in other countries, but the abuses aren't as numerous as they were even 100 years ago. Anyway, I was talking to my Mom about the Indians since she grew up in Oklahoma. She agreed that the breaking of treaties was shameful, but she asked, "But do you expect us to give up Tulsa?" The past happened. Deal with it...and make the future better. For example, in some cultures, the vanquished people (the Indians) would still be a group with no rights. In America, these same vanquished people were granted full status as American citizens and as such have the same rights as anyone under the law. Granted, sometimes what is written and what is reality are sometimes two different things. But the thing is...they have the law behind them. I can't comment or judge on the peyote ruling. I remember it. But I don't have enough FACTS to know why it was banned even though it had been used for centuries. Just because something was done for centuries doesn't mean it was good for a person. The Chinese bound women's feet for centuries too...but I don't think it was good for those women. Instead of trying to break up a religious tradition, is it not possible that perhaps it was trying to change things for the better? I don't know. I do know that peyote is a pretty powerful substance. Some could handle it...some perhaps could not. And if peyote is an endangered species now, then forget about what was done for centuries....use common sense and quit using the stuff so much so that it won't become extinct. And as far as abuses go, why is there not an outcry as to how women are treated by the fundamentalists in the Moslem countries? Do you realize how ANGRY I became when I learned that women are not even supposed to drive a car over there? And what about the HORRIBLE atrocities that have been done by the Bosnians and the Serbs to each other? How can the perpetrators of some of those tortures live with themselves? And yet, the United Nations is condemning their actions. And forces have gone over there to try and keep the peace and try and stop the slaughter. One hundred years ago, I don't think anyone would have cared. Even 60 years ago, there was no big outcry about the injustices shown to the Jews in Germany. Nowadays I think there would be an outcry. Oh sure, we hear about the hate groups. But they are in the minority. Change doesn't happen overnight...and for some it comes very slowly. But when one looks back and compares 100 years ago with now....now is better. More opportunities now....more ways to get help now...more caring now. That is one reason why I am so enthused over the emerging worldwide communications. More talk...more communicating...between the "We the people" of this world...will only, in my opinion, continue the evolving of the human race. That is but one reason why I like DGIV. Juanita
