In my own trade publication -- the ads typically specify that an individual be familiar with 3 or 4 very specific SW tools and/or HW configurations as applied in a given circumstance. Gimmee a break! Doesn't seem to matter whether or not you have an understanding of the fundamentals in an area or can apply those to new situations -- this was the reason I got an engineering degree. No, it only matters whether or not you are familiar with a specific technology or software package. It's a new kind of illiteracy. There was an Asimov story: It was set in the distant future. It was about a top secret military project. An individual had "learned again" how to do basic math addition, subtraction, multiplication and yes, even long division without the aid of a computer.
