OK... :-) Yesterday, I finally read the passage John 8:38-59 that you suggested. I'm a little concerned about the passage. Let me just give you a few thoughts on it. They all center around one following.

It strikes me as a little anti-Jewish.

If Jesus is the Messiah, then he is there for the children of Abraham. But he says they are not the children of Abraham but those of the devil. Now I'm not sure if he is saying this because they don't believe he is the Messiah, or that this is why they don't believe. Of course if he is the Messiah, then he must fulfill all the prophesies; and a big theme in the prophesies is that he will not be believed.

Perhaps you can clarify. I have read some explanations as to why the passage strikes me the way it does, but I'd like to hear your ideas first.
