SHANGHAI, China (AP) - Here's one to add to President Clinton's short list of job options once he leaves the White House: law professor in China.

''I was hoping you would offer me a position here,'' Clinton quipped today when law professor Zhu Lanye asked about his future plans. Zhu is vice dean of the international department at East China University of Politics and Law, Shanghai's main law school. , Shanghai's main law school.

Clinton, who taught constitutional law at the University of Arkansas during the 1970s, said he has no firm plans beyond building a presidential library in Arkansas to house his papers ''and to tell the story'' of his two terms in office.

''I'll be about 54 when I leave office and I don't want to take a retirement. I haven't decided what to do yet or where to do it,'' Clinton said. ''So maybe I will apply for a visiting professorship.''

The president and his wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton, took part in a roundtable discussion with leaders from business, law, religion the arts and the media in Shanghai, China's commercial capital.
