I think LAN business, as in standalone lan chips will probably disappear. Ethernet chips will be integrated in PCs and other devices. NSM should jump on this market. One area they should address is IP phones. Here is one company that is selling IP phones:

There will be a need for IP phone on a chip. You just need to add some some compression and echo cancelation, and you have a killer product.

One of the Selsius products has a mini-hub. You plug the phone to your 10baseT network and attach your computer to the second ethernet port. The problem with their present model is that it is only 10Mbs ethernet. It would be nice to have 1000/100/10 Mbs lan access for the phone to be universal (or almost universal, forgetting ATM)

NSM may be gaining valuable experience integrating multiple cores on a single chip, which will be very important in the future.

What's bad about the present situation, is that all of this needs huge R&D, and NSM has to be rationing their R&D dollars because of the slump they are in right now.
