All, a few weeks ago there were some articles and posts re the 300 MHz GX and when it would be released. Because the article which quoted Tobak was a little ambiguous, Craig suggested that someone ask the horse to set the record straight. Well, I did just that and here is the answer to that question and a couple of others. Some of this may be old news, but it is always good to review the facts every once in a while.207.240.177.145 1. Yes, NSM is working on some enhancements to the 300 MHz GX, but just what type of improvements is not public info yet. Also, they are not saying whether these improvements are necessary to get to 300 MHz, even with 0.25um, or whether they are simply to make the part more competitive. Maybe a little of both. Either way, it sounds like the 300 MHz part will not be available, as Tobak stated, until after Xmas.:-( Hope they are sandbagging a bit on this one. The roadmap that Jim posted a few days ago re Taiwan mb maker and GX? kinda ties in with the delay scenario. 2. The current plan is NOT to release a standalone Cayenne core product. Socket 7 is considered "end of life" technology. The standard line about Slot 1 if a partner is found still applies. 3. Management is strongly committed to the MXi and, as stated by Halla in CC, the goal is still to have samples by 12/98 and volume in early CY99. Any reports of schedule slips should be compared to this schedule. The MXi will be made with 0.25um or better processes. 4. As stated by Tobak, the current plan is to continue to use the PR rating for the MII. Sounds like there is some ongoing discussion about this issue, but according to NSM IR, if Tobak said it, we should believe it. If you stop and think about it, #2 might not be such a bad deal after all. Prolonging Socket 7 probably benefits AMD and IDTI more than NSM and if NSM truly believes that the GX, MXi, and PCOAC products are the future, then why waste precious resources on a product that might actually help the competition? One concern I have about the MXi is, will the motherboard support be ready? It could be a great chip, but if there is nowhere to plug it in, well... Anthony PS Steve, I bought some CRUS myself the other day. They seem to be on a roll with their drive chips, but I am not sure that is enough to make up for slowing sales in other areas.
