HFX appeared to go down in February while SPX was continuously up. Why wouldn't SPX which represents 70 percent of the US Market CAP be an equal index of choice?

You will also note Early April, she also headed south ahead of the
rest of them. Others may diverge , and have more volatility ;
like go up faster or dive faster than she does, but she sets the overall market trend. ( Micro caps excepted ) they live in a world
of their own.
But of the major indexes it consist of the most liquid stocks, the
super caps, thus it takes out a lot of foam and bubbles the other
indexes tend to have built into them.
Sort of like how a moving average will smooth out an index, I see this as a primary leading average of the over all market.
