Rational Announces New UNIX Development Tools
Rational Rose 98, Apex 3.0 and New Release of Quantify Add to Rational's UNIX Lifecycle Solution

CUPERTINO, Calif., July 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Rational(R) Software Corporation (Nasdaq: RATL - news) today announced new releases of several application development tools for the UNIX development environment. These tools include: Rational Rose(R) 98 for UNIX, the market-leading visual modeling tool and Quantify, for Java performance optimization. Rational also announced Rational Apex(R) 3.0, the latest release of its Ada-based programming environment now providing Ada 95 support. Today's announcements are the first in a series of new product releases for the UNIX platform.

''Development teams will benefit from an integrated application development tool solution for the UNIX development environment,'' stated Mike Hofsiss, manager with Bell Atlantic Video Services. ''Rational's UNIX solution is ideal for mixed-language, cross-platform development across the enterprise.''

''Rational is committed to providing its customers with tools that support all the major languages developers employ on the UNIX platform,'' said Pamela Roussos, vice president of product marketing for Rational's Visual Programming business unit. ''Enterprise computing environments require tools which can interoperate between all supported platforms -- Windows and UNIX -- to ensure the consistency and effectiveness of development teams.''

Rational Rose 98 for UNIX

Rational Rose 98 for UNIX features multi-language capabilities, enterprise development enhancements, including integration with ClearCase(R) Rational's multi-platform software configuration management (SCM) solution, enhancements to the Rose Extensibility Interface for extending and customizing the Rational Rose 98 environment and the industry's most comprehensive support for the Unified Modeling Language (UML) v1.1.

The product provides code generation and reverse engineering for C++ and Java and code generation for Ada 93 and Ada 95. The product will be available within 30 days for Sun Solaris, HP-UX, Irix, AIX and Digital Unix at a suggested North American list price of $6,000.

Rational Apex

Rational Apex is an integrated, team-oriented programming environment that provides architectural control and greatly simplifies the process of building and managing Ada and mixed language Ada and C++ applications. Rational Apex offers a consistent development paradigm and target environment across multiple hosts and targets and is highly scalable, supporting projects with millions of lines of code as well as smaller projects.

Quantify

In a separate release, Rational today announced the latest release of Quantify, its powerful performance profiler that helps developers optimize the performance of their Java applications on UNIX. As part of Rational's solution for UNIX developers, Quantify helps developers improve the quality of their applications.

Rational's UNIX Lifecycle Solution

Rational's solution of software development tools for the UNIX platform also includes SoDA, for automated documentation, ClearCase, for software configuration management (SCM), ClearDDTS, for change request management, and TestMate, Rational's integrated testing environment. Together, these tools help increase team productivity, maximize reuse and enhance the iterative development process.

SoDA is designed to support documentation requirements throughout the software lifecycle and allows developers to produce higher-quality, more useful documents with less time and effort.
ClearCase is the first multi-platform software configuration management (SCM) solution to solve the previously intractable problems of team-based software development. With ClearCase, development teams can accelerate development cycles, ensure the accuracy of releases, reliably build and patch previously shipped products and organize an effective development process.
ClearDDTS is a UNIX change request management solution specifically designed to track and manage product defects and enhancement requests uncovered during product development and quality assurance testing. It can be tightly integrated with software configuration management products, such as ClearCase, to help users effectively manage change throughout the software development lifecycle.
TestMate is an integrated testing environment that provides comprehensive test management and test automation for simplified and multi-platform testing.

Rational Announces Latest Version of Quantify

Powerful Performance Profiler Adds Support for Java and Enhances Support For UNIX Developers

CUPERTINO, Calif., July 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Rational(R) Software Corporation (Nasdaq: RATL - news)today announced the newest version of Quantify, a powerful performance profiler that automatically identifies performance bottlenecks and helps developers optimize the performance of their C++ and Java applications on UNIX. Quantify is the ideal tool for developers who want to deploy Java systems without compromising performance.

''Rational is meeting customer needs by providing industry-leading development tools that help increase the speed, ease and accuracy of application development for the UNIX platform,'' stated Pamela Roussos, vice president of product marketing for Rational's Visual Programming business unit. ''Quantify addresses a critical issue customers have with creating enterprise-wide and distributed applications in Java -- performance.''

About Quantify

Quantify enables developers to profile their Java applications and identify performance bottlenecks using a Java monitoring interface developed by Rational in conjunction with Sun Microsystems. Quantify intercepts and times each byte code instruction run through the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) and correlates this information with Java source code and components to give developers comprehensive timing information on their entire Java application. Quantify's customizable performance data collection features allow developers to filter the performance data collected, allowing them to focus on the most critical portions of their application.

Using Rational's patented Object Code Insertion (OCI) technology, Quantify already supports C/C++ profiling and the added Java support allows developers to profile and optimize mixed language applications. Quantify works with any development environment utilizing the JavaSoft JVM release 1.1.6 for Java on Solaris and is available in July 1998 at a North American list price of $1,398 plus $250 for support (minimum four licenses).

Re: Earnings

According to www.whispernumber.com, the "whisper number"
for RATL for the upcoming earnings is 0.02 in comparison
to a expected consensus of 0.09, i.e. a negative surprise.
I guess the reliability of this site can be questioned,
but maybe some of the weakness in the stock lately can be
explained by this (if this actually is the word on the street).

I would have guessed that RATL would surprise in a positive
way. From where I work (Scandinavia) RATL has never been
stronger, many new clients, and they have full-page
employment ads for more sales staff and consultants.
Also, Rose'98 have sold quite well I hear.

Another note: Select Software (SLCTY), which was the fastest
growing CASE tool vendor '96, is up for sale. Their last
earnings report was really bad, and according to a press
release a couple of weeks ago they have "received preliminary indications of interest concerning a possible acquisition
of SELECT". Select is rather weak in the US but among the
top competitors to RATL in Europe (it is originally a british company). I don't think RATL would be interested, the
rumour I've heard is that among others, Inprise (INPR,
previously Borland), is a potential buyer.

Best,

/Hans-Erik
