DEFENSE POLITICS

Anchorage Daily News
June 26, 1998 Editorial Staff

All things considered, national defense should not be a matter of political partisanship. Apparently it is, however, and Alaska is right in the middle of things. At issue is the proposed deployment of a nuclear missile shield designed to protect the United States -- except, that is, the states of Alaska and Hawaii. . . . The plan to omit the 49th and 50th states is one backed by Democrats
The GOP is prepared to have this become a political issue" as the mid-term congressional election season dawns. . . . The basic premise of any national defense policy -- as propounded by any national political leader, regardless of party -- should be that all Americans will be under a shield of protection against our enemies. And that includes Alaskans and Hawaiians, even though President Bill Clinton and Vice President Al Gore may not think so.
