NetDynamics CEO Zack Rinat and Scott McNealy's right-hand man, Ed Zander, pushed the party line that NetDynamics was close to an initial public offering. But it looks like the company was hurting for cash before the deal, and wasn't having any luck in raising it from VCs or pulling in product revenues from the latest revision to its Web application software. The morning the deal was announced, Rinat and other company officers were on the phone with customers to reassure them about NetDynamics' prospects. One vice president told a major customer that Sun had wired $10 million into NetDynamics' bank account -- a curious move, since the deal was done as a stock swap.
