Merrill Lynch recently mentioned the possibility of Loral trying to "buy into" Intelsat/New Skies. I have no idea if this will come to pass, and if it does, what exactly will be the arrangement, but here are some compelling figures. A study on the satellite internet ISP/backbone market(a summary exists at spotbeam.com) estimated the present market at only $70.5 million. Intelsat had 64%, Orion 19%, and SatMex 6%. The future?

"Current market Opportunity is in ISP Links: In provision of bent-pipe capacity for linking ISPs with US backbone infrastructure and intra-regional backbone capacity, they have scored a major success. Within the last two years they have leased the equivalent of thirty-three 36 MHz equivalent transponders, either directly to end-users or to major or specialised carriers.

At the time of writing at least another 20 full transponders on current or near-to-launch satellites were earmarked for such traffic. We estimate that the size of the market for transponders for such traffic is doubling every five months. We estimate that by the year 2002, this market could be worth between $750 million and $2.5 billion a year to satellite operators."

So you can see that any joining of forces would unite three of the top four satellite internet carriers under one roof(PanAmSat is the other). Orion will be even better positioned with Orion 3 and their Hawaii gateway, as will SatMex with the launch of the powerful SatMex 5. This is a possible increased revenue source that remains completely unrecognized.

More rural telephony deals, unfortunately not involving Loral:

Hughes Network Systems Supplies Satellite Equipment For National Phone Company In Chile
TES Quantum(TM) Terminals to Allow Full Range of Telecommunications Services in Both Urban and Hard-to-Reach Areas
GERMANTOWN, Md., July 6, 1998 - Hughes Network Systems (HNS) today announced a contract to provide TES(TM) Quantum very small aperture terminals (VSATs) to Coasin, a leading telecommunications equipment distributor in Chile, for deployment to CTC Mundo owned by Compania de Telecomunicaciones de Chile SA [NYSE:CTC - news], who provide long-distance telephone services

CTC will use the TES-based network to provide demand-assigned voice, fax, and data applications throughout the country. The network will encompass remote areas throughout Chile, where terrestrial telephone networks either do not exist or are impossible to deploy.

''We chose HNS because their TES equipment is second-to-none and their team could respond quickly and meet all our technical demands for a telecommunications network,'' said Enrique Celis, Coasin. ''HNS was also able to provide extensive training, both here and in the United States, for installation, maintenance, and management of the network.''

The telephony network will include three main gateways -- located in Santiago, La Serena, and Ovalle -- and CTC will initially deploy 35 stations for rural telephony .throughout the country, all of which will support intelligent public phones, plus 12 stations for private services. The network provides fast-call setups, excellent quality voice, and fast-response data connections.

''This contract represents our first TES contract in Chile and we hope to continue to meet the growing demand for telecommunications equipment in Chile,'' said Vinod Shukla, vice president of the Satellite Networks Division at HNS. ''Many regions currently do not have adequate telephone and data networks and TES satellite technology is a rapid and extremely cost-effective way to meet Chile's future communication needs.''

The TES Quantum mesh satellite network provides demand-assigned, high- quality voice and data communications in nearly 100 countries with more than 20,000 circuits currently in operation. TES supports rural telephony; thin- route public or private networks; and interfaces with public network signaling systems, PABXs, and handsets. INTELSAT selected the TES Quantum architecture as the thin-route DAMA standard for its 140 signatory countries and nonsignatory users.

A world leader in satellite products and network systems for more than 25 years, HNS has 65 percent of the global VSAT market and has shipped nearly 200,000 terminals. Headquartered in Germantown, MD, near Washington, DC, the company has sales and support offices worldwide. HNS offers communications network solutions that include a complete line of integrated satellite, enterprise networking products, and fixed and mobile wireless networks. HNS is a Hughes Electronics Corporation company and an ISO-9001-certified manufacturer. The earnings of Hughes Electronics (NYSE: GMH - news) are used to calculate the earnings per share attributable to GMH (NYSE symbol) common stock.

Changing topics slightly, does anybody on this thread
has any insight on VSAT's up and down roller coaster?
Do you think the high volatility is due to its small
capitalization, or is there something more fundamental
at work? In the long run, I like VSAT's technology a lot,
but it is very frustrating to see it go up and down for
no apparent reason.
