The Ampex DST 712 high speed automated cartridge library has been introduced to meet the company's data storage and retrieval needs. The unit will cope with the expansion of Shell Expro's seismic interpretation data based on its central data server an Auspex 7000/720. The Ampex DST 712 is used to back up this information. The Ampex DST 712 is suited to handling the enormous amount of data involved in this type of operation. Combining fast robotics, 400 full exchanges per hour, with a search rate of 1600MB/second, the DST 712 has an average access time for any file in the entire library of less than 20 seconds. Data transfer rates are also second to none at 20MB/second per drive with burst speed of 40MB. Each DST 712 has one to two drives per machine, each with its own Ultra-SCSI data path, producing an aggregate transfer rate of up to 40MB/second and 80MB/second burst speed. The DST 712 is a scaleable system that is being used in conjunction with Legato Networker, its existing enterprise back-up software solution. This has enabled the DST 712's introduction without the need for time consuming and costly retraining of system support staff. Robin Gordon, Petroleum Engineering IT Consultant with Shell Expro, commented: "Our seismic data and subsequent interpretations are a valuable asset used with many software products and supporting important business decisions from drilling through to reservoir management. This machine meets our needs for a fast accurate and scaleable storage facility." Note: Shell U.K. Exploration and Production operates in the U.K. sector of the North Sea on behalf of Shell and Esso.
