We are well aware of these disputes which turn on two issues: the number of families affected by the move, and the extent of fair compensation. We are participating in the process of resolving these issues with the affected parties led by the designated agency established for this purpose by the Tanzanian Government. This process will produce an outcome consistent with Tanzanian law. Finally, we would suggest that to characterise this dispute, essentially about expropriation and compensation, as a “human rights violation” is to broaden this concept to a point where it becomes almost meaningless. We think this is a disservice to those many situations on our continent, and indeed on all other continents, where genuine violations of basic human rights are taking place.
