There are a few comments that I would like to make regarding this article:

1. Thanks for the post. I was unaware of the 10% ownership by Daimler in ERC. This for me is significant. I believe that Daimler is pursuing the FC market more than any other transportation company out there. The big issue for me is that another company is willing to spend a significant amount of money in this company.
2. The article talks about Ballard's FC being used for cars(sexy). True enough. However, everything that I have seen indicates that Ballard is interested in many markets, transportation being only one of them.
3. It is quickly becoming apparent to me that we are indeed at the beginning of a new age - fuel cell. Not necessarily hydrogen for a while, but it appears that fuel cells will indeed take off. That being the case, there will be ample room for many organizations to make money from them. I see organizations like Ballard, ERC, Plug Power, Manhattan Scientifics all making significant money from this providing they can carry through on the R&D as well as business aspects of manufacturing and marketing their products.
4. My difficulty in all of this is: I cannot predict the movement of prices for each of these companies. IMHO, there is much money, in terms of share price growth, to be made by many companies. As a result, I buy and hold.

Sid: Thanks for the URL. An interesting set of information, most of which I already knew, however, the Benz connection with ERC I DIDN'T know. Certainly add's a little bit of legitimacy, eh? Since I believe in playing a variety of horses(at least 2-3) in any one market sector, and particularly when that market sector is still in its formative stages....welll.....ERC look's to be one to investigate. Thanks again for the URL.

The automotive industry's perspective on Fuel Cells:

"Fuel-cell cars will arrive by the year 2004. The big 3 are investing millions of dollars in this technology. Ford is investing around $420 million in a joint venture with Mercedes-Benz Ballard Power Systems Inc. General motors' fuel-cell-powered vehicle will get 80 miles per gallon with a 300-mile driving range. Chrysler has teamed up with GM's Delphi unit and is forecasting production of 200,000 fuel-cell-powered vehicles by the year 2010.

...Automakers predict that the only way these cars will sell is if they run on gasoline or other liquid fuels. Mercedes-Benz predicts it will sell 40,000 units annually by 2006 and Toyota has outfitted the RAV4 sport utility vehicle with a fuel cell and will have a fuel-cell-powered car on the market first.

Fuel-cell power is a vast improvement over electric power in vehicles in terms of range. The technology comes at a great cost, however. Ten years ago, a medium-priced car equipped with a fuel cell would have cost $20 million. Today, the cost is down to $200,000."
