Senate hearing:

As for the media, with exception of the Washington Post, USA Today, and the Financial Times of London, the general press here and abroad has failed miserably in addressing the crisis. As recently as November, for example, The Los Angeles Times was calling Y2K basically a hoax -- ironically at the very time that their internal operations people were struggling over allocating resources to meet compliance deadlines.

The Wall Street Journal's coverage has been abysmal. I was told last year by a Journal reporter that his editors weren't interested in the Y2K story because it had already been told. COMPANIES pouring millions of dollars into Year 2000 projects should take advantage of the opportunity to end up with much more than just compliant systems, according to an industry expert.

Corporate consulting firm James Martin & Co chief operating officer Patrick Litre said companies were missing an important opportunity if they view their Y2K expenditure as a necessary evil that would do nothing more than ensure they continue to operate.

"Many CEOs see the whole Year 2000 task as simply a system remediation issue," he said.

"What they are not understanding is that it provides a rare chance to get a complete picture of their organisation's IT infrastructure and how it interrelates with their business operations."
