1) Why would you not want to have the option to exclude a poster if the decision to filter it out it was yours only?

You make a lot of good points. They are particularly true if one is a reader.

(AND the exclusion affects you only, no one else!)

If one chooses to post to a thread I believe one has an obligation to read at least the recent posts. If I had to read a repeat post from someone who was filtering I would find it annoying or inconsiderate. I also find some posters that read all the posts in a thread annoying, inconsiderate and worse.

I believe the best ideas for change focus on ways to improve the interaction between posters.

Perhaps a new and improved search engine would work. If one could search a thread with advanced options including "AND NOT POSTER" the same result could be achieved. SI has indicated that an improved search capability is in the works.

I think filtering is a good idea for lurkers and for people doing research after the fact. I do wonder if it has any benefit to the quality of a thread in a real time situation.

I read four+ other forums. (computer hardware forums) None of them come close to the quality of the SI site. The posts are of equal quality and there are off topic posts and out of line posts just as in SI. Moderators keep things under control if things get too far out of hand as they do in SI.

My question is what sets the SI format apart and would real time / near time filtering be a benefit or a detriment to the overall quality of a thread? I place a low value on the individual rights arguments on both sides of the equation.
