Jane,

Ah! Now we're talking! The story of David is a great one, indeed! I find it silly when people say, "Well David did this or that and so God endorses this or that." Unfortunately, it is commonplace for people to take things from the Bible out of context (to varying degrees). Fortunately, in order to answer the silly claims supported by out-of-context statements, we must study the Bible. My hope is that studying the Bible will help me understand and learn more about the culture that I live in.

Anyway... I'm tempted to explore a related topic: the Jews ask for Earthly kings to rule them (of which David is one of those kings). But we should probably stick with David. I think the story of David shows how, even a great king, can make a whole lot of mistakes. I was recently told a quote by Alexander Pope: "Born but to die, and reasoning but to err." And some would consider God's treatment of David in spite of all his sins to be unfair when compared to His treatment of others who have sinned by lesser degrees. Maybe the story says to us that we can't be perfect... that we are doomed to make mistakes... that the results of our actions will not necessarily be fair. Too cynical?

Greg

ps. I'm going to be very busy for the next month or so... and I may have to take a short hiatus from the thread. I apologize in advance.
