OT, You do have some valid points. However, public education before the turn of the century was not supported by federal tax dollars. It was all local money, and VERY little at that. Remember teachers were all woman in one room with grades 1-12 in one classroom. Which was very efficient believe it or not. The older taught the younger.

What I am saying is that big government is very INefficient at doing certain things. Let them be responsible for basic infrastructure, defense, etc. Let the states handled the rest following laws of course. Good example is welfare. It was a mess for years and years.

All those taxes go to the Federal government and then is funneled BACK to state governments through a HUGE inefficient bureaucracy. Totally unnecessary way of handling $$$$$$$$$.

*****more off topic*****
Schools should be private. Then all sorts of ideas would flourish instead of the government propaganda handed down now in public schools. Parents should be free to educate their children in their ideas and morals, and should be free to send them to religious schools if they so choose or educate them at home. Without having to pay enormous amounts of tax money for schools they would rather not use. I am a teacher. I would still have a job were there no state supported schools. All other good teachers would too.
Welfare: elminate it. Leave charities to decide who is worthy and worth giving money. They will not give it to drug addicts, malingerers, etc.]
The bottom line is: would you rather live in a country or world where someone else can force you to live in his way? Thats what we have now. I'd rather chose and take my chances. That is what made us a healthy middle class, not government meddling.

Cat,

OT - Government

One of the areas that you didn't mention was the 'Space Program', which BTW, actually 'spun' off the 'microchip' . Now let me see where that development might have been used! Can you say 'personal computer'?

Oh yes, as I recall the Internet was funded by the US Government to tie Universities together. Now let me see where that development is being used everyday - uh - Oh yes, I have it now about SI!

And if you haven't had the opportunity to travel to some of the 'third' world areas, I'm sure you would return to the 'overtaxed' US an again enjoy 'drinking' water and 'less polluted' air!

It is true that we have our problems, but after having been other places, after complaining about these very same issues, I thinks I stay here! The problem, IMHO, is that society has lost the ability to instill in some of the youth or some of those that have come recently or some long term citizens, born and raised here that in order for a 'free' society to work, people must learn to respect others, and be 'civil' in the case of a disagreement.

Doctors who 'rip' off the system, or those who stay on 'welfare' by their choice, or any number that comes to mind.

Regards,

Ken
