Please note the date of the press release that J.R. posted - May 5th. It stated that "later in the month 3Dfx anticipates shipping the 4 millionth chipset". This could mean anytime from mid May to the end of May. By making a conservative assumption that the 4 millionth unit was shipped on May 6th, if 3Dfx is close to the 5 millionth at the end of the quarter, it means that the company sold almost a million chips in only 7-8 weeks. The quarter contained 5 weeks of sales prior to the announcement which must also be added into the mix. These early sales were probably slightly more brisk than at the end of the quarter (when Diamond cut back on orders) so I would estimate that at least 500K units were shipped in this period. I therefore estimate that unit sales might come in at 1.4 million for the quarter. Apply the $45/unit price you mentioned and revenue comes to $63 million for the quarter, an approximately 26% gain and inline with management's guidance.

Mike, re: "This quarter they will have higher operating expenses (building a new research facility in Austin),..."

Actually, building an R&D facility is not an operating expense - it is a capitalized asset and will not affect earnings one way or the other (just cash levels).
