I was in the CPU store in 100 Oaks mall in Nashville, and found the price labeling in the store to be outright terrible. All sorts of software is on the shelves, but few price tags anywhere. The price tags that were on the shelf were often not under the correct software titles. This is not good for impulse buying at all.

FWIW, I think CPU is in a very strong position as a retailer. The buyout of Computer City is positive, although I wonder if they were really a significant threat. Long run, there is a significant, probably majority, portion of the population that will buy computer related items (maybe not always the PC itself though) through a retail outlet. Direct merchandising has its place, but will never put CPU out of business. CPU controls its destiny, now it must execute.

I disagree -

I like to buy expensive equipment locally because if it doesn't work or I am not satisfied with the product, I take it right back. Out of the 25-50 computers systems I've bought over the years, though, I've only returned one but I've known those that have 1-800 ordered computer systems who went through hell getting them to work correctly.

Remember when Bill Gates was showcasing one of his new products and his computer crashed - I'm sure he would have been delighted to be able to go back to CPU and drop it in their lap rather than to have to call Dell for a pickup (assuming those were his alternatives).
