The fun never ends. I have a friend who (although incorporated) will not do any work at a client site except for meetings and software installation. At my current assignment, I have an e-mail address, but cannot be included in any telephone listings for fear of being classified as an employee. Getting access cards to get into the building is also a hassle if you are a contractor.

The bottom line is that the IRS wants ALL wages reported on a W-2 somewhere. There is too much money that "falls through the cracks" when software types (among others) get paid using their SSN on 1099s. Microsoft is really not to blame here. They are trying to make the best of a ridiculous situation. Maybe we can get a repeal of 1706 into the next round of IRS restructuring.
