Seen this weekend:
(big movie weekend, for me at least...)

Psycho *****
Believe the hype. Even with every shock already beaten into our subconscious, every plot twist so imitated throughout b-moviedom, this is an incredible film. If you already know the whole story, watch it for the subtlties. The emphasis on the clenching jaw of Anthony Perkins. The inflections of characters' voices when under stresses, and of course, trademark Hitchcock camera work and direction. I can't decide which was better, Vertigo or this, but it's damn close. MUST SEE. I can't believe I'd made it this long without.

Bitter Moon****
Oh, my. Roman Polanski's unsettling, somewhat comedic film about love, obsession, devotion, and infidelity, this movie follows a couple's gradual descent into...well, I'll let you see it for yourself. (5th grade book report...sorry.) Suffice it to say, it's been sticking with me way too long, as my own relationship has too much in common with these twisted people. Must see, if you like that tormented relationship type of thing.

Conspiracy Theory ***.5*
Best surprise I've had from a movie. I don't see too many movies I don't like, because I can usually tell when I'm gonna hate one going in. This one totally had me fooled...come on, Julia Roberts and Mel Gibson in a Hollywood chase'em? But what saves it is Mel's sympathetic character. Yep! A Hollywood big-budget with a bit of character development thrown in to boot! How did that one get past the producers? Worth seeing on cable, renting if you want something light.
