>> T/A has me accumulating semiconductor stocks now.

Applied Materials pre-announced this evening. I don't think Intel & other semis will spare better next week. I've worked in semi for the last 14 years and this time I suspect the down cycle may be a long one because the recent up cycle (91-97) was quite long as well. Most of investors I know could not wait to get back to semis. But I'm afraid the over-capacity and Asia problems will not be all resolved till the end of 1999.

On Yahoo: I think it may hold steady here (180's) for a while. (Softbank buy point?) I don't think it soon goes down in 160's where I'd like to buy again. Remember it went from 129 to 99 in the previous correction, so I hope it would do the same this time.

>> If many of the Yahoo shorts had been using technical analysis they wouldn't have kept their damaging positions. They would have cut and run.<<

Dead wrong, William. TA (and simple logic) was the foundation for establishing my short position. To cite but a few technical indicators, stochastics were flashing "overbought" more than a few days ago, and divergence from the 50-day MA is still ridiculous. Shorts, using TA properly, ADDED to their positions during the recent run-up. I did, and am showing a pretty decent profit.... And now we're looking at a possible "head and shoulders" chart formation, implying further downside potential. Your explanation of "resistance" and "support" was very good, however.

Aloha and happy investing,

Da Zipstah

Did T/A warn about AMAT's earnings warning on Friday? I agree that T/A is very useful for viewing trends but news also helps to complement charts. Why buy semi stocks now when it looks like there will be more earnings warnings over the next week?

I hold shares in KLAC, PRIA and ESIO and have suffered losses. I also hold INTC but am wary of it's earnings report next week.
