Rick, I think he's on to something. Make a good free, and it can become ubiquitous. As for me, I'd like to upgrade my car to a Lexus. Right now, though, it would be too expensive, but I can just wait until Lexus wants to expand its market to everyone, and it will be free! Same thing for travel to Europe. Don't they want more tourists? Don't the airlines want more passengers? Does this guy really get paid for that drivel? Here's a slightly longer excerpt: "Installation and interoperability issues are another stumbling block, he said. For example, Geiver said most security measures are somehow tied to the mainframe -- so any new technology would also have to work with those systems. 'There is already a lot of investment in the structure that has been set up in terms of authentication and pro-files,' he said. Analysts also predicted a niche market for the technology, at least until it comes as a standard component in PC hardware and the price tag isn't an issue. 'The whole area of biometric authentication holds a lot of promise, but basically, to make this ubiquitous, it's going to have to be free,' said Chris Goodhue, an analyst at Stamford, Conn.-based Gartner Group, Inc." That little aside about the technology working with the mainframe . . . HELLOOOO! What do you guys think the Oracle alliance is about? Maybe on/off switches aren't the wave of the future? And to try to translate that dumb "free" remark -- it sounds like he is suggesting that the costs be fully packaged into the base price of the computer, etc., rather than being a separate option at the consumer level. Kind of like realtor fees when you buy a house. I think I woke up too early this morning . . . still cranky.
