BABIES' IN CHINA
7/10/98 13:40

To: National Desk, Political Writer
Contact: Mike Collins of the Republican National Committee,
202-863-8550
WASHINGTON, July 10 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Republican National
Committee (RNC) Chairman Jim Nicholson today called for an apology
from U.S. Trade Representative Charlene Barshefsky, whose cache of 40
black market ''Beanie Babies'' was seized by US Customs officials as
she returned from China as a member of the president's official
delegation.
''Instead of trying to reduce our $50 billion trade deficit with
China, our trade representative was scouring the street markets of
Beijing grabbing up every illegal, black market 'Beanie Baby' she
could get her hands on,'' said Nicholson.
''What kind of signal does that send about this administration's
seriousness in combating smuggling and foreign violations of American
copyrights? What kind of model does she set for others travelling
abroad?''
''Beanie Babies'' are made by the Illinois-based Ty Company, which
strictly forbids the sale of the toys in China. Ty's lawyer, James
White, has likened buying illegal black market Chinese Beanie Babies
to ''buying a stolen car.''
When reports first surfaced in The Washington Post's ''Reliable
Source'' column that Barshefsky had bought 40 illegal ''Beanie
Babies'' in China, she denied that she had done so to The Post's John
Harris.
''This is just one more example of a Clinton administration
official who thinks she's above the law, who thinks it's OK to lie to
the press and public,'' Nicholson said. ''In America no one ought to
be above the law and American officials -- especially -- should tell
the truth to the citizens who pay their salaries. An apology is called
for -- at the very least.''

WHAT's IT COST
===================
On the first day of college, the Dean addressed the students, pointing out some of the rules:

"The female dormitory will be out-of-bounds for all male students, and the male dormitory to the female students. Anybody caught breaking this rule will be fined $20 the first time."

He continued, "Anybody caught breaking this rule the second time will be fined $60. Being caught a third time will cost you a fine of $180. Are there any questions?"

At this point, a male student in the crowd inquired:
"How much for a season pass?"

The German controllers at Frankfurt Airport were a short-tempered lot.
They not only expected you to know your parking location but how to
get there without any assistance from them. So it was with some
amusement that we (PanAm 747) listened to the following exchange
between Frankfurt ground and a British Airways 747 (radio call
Speedbird 206) after landing. Speedbird 206: "Good morning Frankfurt,
Speedbird 206 clear of the active."
Ground "Guten morgan, taxi to your gate."
The British Airways 747 pulls onto the main taxiway and stops.
Ground: "Speedbird, do you not know where you are going?"
Speedbird 206: "Stand by, ground, I'm looking up the gate location
now."
Ground (with typical German impatience): "Speedbird 206, have you
never flown to Frankfurt before?"
Speedbird 206 (coolly): "Yes, in 1944. But I didn't stop".
