Nokia to begin shipments of its CDMA phones to Sprint PCS USA's Largest all-Digital Nationwide PCS Provider to begin offering Nokia 2170 this Month
(April 16, 1998) - Nokia today announced it has signed a contract with Sprint PCS, the USA's largest PCS provider, for PCS handsets. Nokia developed its first Code Division Multiple Access-based (CDMA) PCS 1900 MHz digital phone, the Nokia 2170, at its research and development center in San Diego. The CDMA phones will be manufactured at Nokia's facilities in Fort Worth, Texas. Deliveries will begin this month.
The Nokia 2170 supports all new digital features, including short message service (SMS), call forwarding, call waiting and caller ID. The phone can be personalized easily with 10 distinct ringing tones, VIP alert tones. It can be ordered in different colors and has multi-language capabilities including English, French and Spanish.
Larry Paulson, vice president, CDMA product line management at Nokia Mobile Phones Inc., said the Nokia 2170 incorporates Nokia's own CDMA chip design, which provides customers a choice in selecting CDMA digital technology. Nokia is one of the few companies in the world to design and manufacture both 800 MHz and 1900 MHz phones with its own chip set.
"The Nokia 2170, along with the Nokia 2180 (dual-mode 800 MHz), reflects Nokia's dominance in digital technology development," said Paulson. "Now Sprint PCS customers can enjoy the digital features of the new Nokia 2170. When combined with the exceptional call clarity, security and reach of the 100 percent digital Sprint PCS CDMA nationwide network, the Nokia 2170 is a winning product."
The Nokia 2170 incorporates all of Nokia's award-winning features, including the company's pioneering, big-screen, 30-character LCD display with permanent signal and battery-strength indicators, and separate voicemail and text-message-waiting indicators. "One-touch" dialing keys provide instant access to emergency services, voicemail, messaging, keyguard and frequently called numbers. All features are easily accessible via Nokia's user-friendly menu with soft-key interface.
"We have worked very closely on the introduction of Nokia's first CDMA PCS phone," said Mike Coad, vice president of subscriber equipment for Sprint PCS. "Nokia's experience in digital wireless products, sales and support combined with the Sprint PCS 100-percent digital, 100-percent CDMA nationwide PCS network makes the Nokia 2170 a valuable addition to the extensive line of Sprint PCS phones from which our customers can choose. The Nokia 2170 will be available in RadioShack stores, Sprint PCS retail stores and other third party retail stores nationwide in the U.S."
In its introductory slim-battery configuration, the Nokia 2170 provides up to 120 minutes of talk time or up to 53 hours of standby time. An optional extended NiMH (nickel metal hydride) battery pack is also available, providing up to four hours and fifteen minutes of talk time or up to 110 hours (more than four days) of standby time. A full range of accessories, unmatched by any other manufacturer in the industry, are available, including hands-free car, desk and headset kits.
