While there is some synergy between being a long distance carrier and a cell network owner (because incremental long distance traffic is almost free to carry, once you have the local access solved), I think it's more central to Wcom to cement its business broadband business. That means more internet backbone -- which has to be added to internally, given the regulators.

It also means more local fiber. (Which, together with Uunet, is Wcom's core competitive advantage.) The best way of adding to local fiber, I think, is to buy Wcii. With its wireless fiber network.

BTW, I think it was me that mentioned Sprint PCS first. <gg>
