Grant, Although I am aware of the bombadier beetles, I haven't looked into how the mechanism works. I would guess however that the spraying started out with one chemical , and became further enhanced by the addition of further chemicals, at first into the same cavity by cells lining it's wall, and then by combining the chemicals of three cavities into one stream.

On discovery I saw a segment where birds would deliberately disturb a nest of formic acid spraying ants, and then extend their wings to get a good dousing. It turns out that the spray was effective in eliminating mites in their feathers.
