Your theory about the first chemical being a less advanced defense mechanism makes some sense.

Here's the question though. The enzyme's purpose is only to allow the two chemicals to function together without the bettle exploding. Soooo... If the enzyme came before the 3rd chemical, I don't see what advantage would be given to the beetle since the enzyme would have no purpose yet. If the enzyme came after the other chemical, the beetle would explode like in the laboratory. This is why I bring this animals up. It seems very hard to explain.
