The issue for customers wanting to add front office automation has to do with choosing between completely different characteristics. If they go the route of Siebel, they get the highly specialized, full-featured products. Doing that requires using other vendors or partners to integrate front office automation with back office automation. On the other hand, it spreads the business around so they don't become entirely dependent on one vendor the way companies wish hadn't happened in the 70s and 80s when they became dependent on IBM.

Going the route of SAP for front office stuff, the modules aren't likely to be nearly so robust. But the compromise might be worth it to enjoy the benefits of a sole-source vendor for most or all of their front and back office stuff. It used to be that it took a lot longer to deploy SAP's product, but the new AcceleratedSAP seems to be a big hit in minimizing deployment time.

Caveat: I own Siebel shares.
