I do not think they are going to need to get into directional drilling to extract coal bed methane. As I understand the extraction process, it entails formation dewatering and vapor extraction through single extraction points. I may be wrong here and hope to provide some documentation to this effect. In the meantime check out this link I came across:

Look at the coalbed methane in say Raliegh County. Looks like its around 300 scf/ton. At 10,000,000 tons of coal that's 3 billion scf of methane. Also check out depths. Pretty much within first 1000 feet.
