Forced by Micrososoft's marketing acumen to accept a deficient OS in order to be able to use software that is often unavailable to non Wintel users and communicate with others without worrying about cross-platform issues.

"There must be something good about their product that made you select it over all those other choices. Care to explain?"

1) We all admit to there being a network effect. Similar to the VHS vs. betamax race. There was more content available for VHS so VHS got more market share. Everyone agrees that it was a lesser solution. And again, I cannot force software vendors to support Linux, so if there is a solution I need that exists on Wintel, I may have to choose Wintel.

2) As others have pointed out, many people don't have a choice. The choice has been made by the Corporate IT department for their own reasons. After learning Microsoft programs at work, it is natural to try to leverage that energy and use Microsoft programs at home.
