Why do you keep wanting to throw Intel in the fray? Intel just made the chips that IBM decided would power IBM compatables. Later, IBM made a couple of runs at Intel with the 486SLC but the lack of a math coprocesser did them in. (Not to mention the Pentium). But that was way after IBMs fate in the PC business was set in stone. IBMs big mistake was not going after Compaqs reverse engineering with a vengence but we are all glad they didn't.
