Microsoft Says Profits Rose 28 Pct.

Since Windows 98 went on sale June 25, more than 1 million retail upgrade licenses have been purchased in North America, the company said.

While demand for Windows 98 came too late to help the quarter's results, the upbeat sales picture contrasted with earlier warnings by Microsoft officials that growth might ebb this year in part because of the Asian economic slump and the sheer size of the company that dominates the PC software business.

Microsoft executives, however, traditionally underplay the company's outlook in financial statements, and the company consistently has beaten analysts' forecasts.

Mike and thread, Big buys in after-hour trading and price was pushed up to 117 3/8--higher than Thursday's closing.
