Mohan:
Your ref: SUBJECT: The Unbearable Unimportance of Being India

Makes very interesting reading of the contributors including you. Your notes under column 14 is a major issue, as you identified it.
Another point I want to mention.

Most of the Indians are outside the judaeochristian traditions. Hindu religion with many Gods and Goddesses, unaccustomed religious practices, languages, culture etc is completely alien to the Judaeochristian faith. India is also a poor country with a rich cultural heritage. India is also an illiterate country with one of the best world class scientific establishment. India is a poor country with some very fabulously wealthy elite. These stark contrasts are very unappealing to the western mind and eye. The lack of sanitation, municipal facilities, the crowds, the dust and the walking sticks ( emaciated people) make the foreigners cringe.
When and if Clinton visits India, he has to take his own water to drink. Indians make do with unprotected water supply, if at all it is available.
In the last 50 years, I have seen that India is getting the recognition it deserves. Look at our software engineers, doctors, businessmen. Each one of them just being himself or herself in USA and other foreign countries brings awareness of India in the minds of these people. They are the Indian ambassadors.

Under the present circumstances, if India is not aligned with US, India is not looked upon favorably.

Recently Gujral made the following statements in New York: To paraphrase him:
1: The definition of a third world should change. The criterion should be based on science and technology and man power.
2: Under the present regime and circumstances, those who have weapons are safe and those who don't are unsafe.
3: CTBT is a charade. Neither comprehensive nor a ban.
4: Security Council members can not deny representation to 1 billion people.
5: Gujral told Clinton that his (Gujral's) "third eye" sees an invisible sign (board) at the security council entrance that one is welcome if one had money and bomb. (We got the bomb, but no money - Schuks). Gujral added that it is easier to have a bomb than money.

India suffers from RODNEY DANGERFIELD SYNDROME - NO RESPECT
