I agree that it is fascinating that CS First Boston initiates coverage of PeopleSoft twice within one month and with two polar ratings (June 18 - Buy; Today - Hold). Clearly if there is no additional information provided, it is probably safe to assume it is insincere, and serves some other purpose than to inform or enlighten.

Excerpts from Robertson Stephens, July 16 report:

q2:98 preview - expecting a strong quarter, with upside potential and continued strong balance sheet metrics and competitive outlook

Overall, we maintain our buy rating: long-term fundamentals remain solidly intact -- psft remains a core holding

expects earnings to slightly exceed .14

expects trend of services as increased % of sales to continue: licenses $149 Mil / services 146 Mil.

tempers enthusiasm based on expectation that PeopleSoft will provide cautious guidance about 1999.

some positive comments about acquisitions and vertical strategy

Rick.

Both June 16 and today (July 16) are dates
close to option expiration. Purely coincidental
with their initiation of coverage?
