Dipy:
<<People in the US are more likely to regard India as oppressive and wretched. >>

Oppressive heat and wretched clerks ---Is that what your are talking about.
Your hostility to India is patent and showing. There is a difference between your criticism of India when I compare yours to that of Mohan. Both of you are saying the same thing in many instances. Mohan has an underlying current of love for the country, when he talks about Kerala and makes critical remarks about corruption etc.
But you .......you are different. You are hostile first,& foremost and spew venom at every opportunity, when it comes to India.
I am going to get only one sided view of India from you. I had enough of your venomous attack on India we love.
This question was posed by a philosopher-ethicist. Would one love or hate his mother, who is a prostitute and a whore, and conceived a child during one of those business encounters, but put the child through college, so that he or she won't have to do what she did. India educated you and nourished you. This is what you give in return. The oppressive wretched masses and similar Govt did educate you through subsidies to Govt and private schools and colleges. Take a look at the other side of the coin, and come back with some constructive ideas. That may save your soul.
Best wishes
