From Komag's release yesterday, available on Yahoo's RDRT page:

''We remain very encouraged with our success in product qualifications using our new substrate and epitaxial sputtering process technologies. Komag recently began initial shipments of advanced disk media to the industry's first 3 1/2-inch giant magnetoresistive (GMR) disk drive program. In addition, Read-Rite (Nasdaq: RDRT - news) recently reported that it had demonstrated the feasibility of producing GMR magnetic recording heads capable of recording over 15 GB of data on a single 3 1/2-inch disk. Disk samples from Komag were successfully used in that feasibility demonstration,'' said Johnson.

Guess RDRT's statement "working directly with other vendors" includes Komag and yesterday's release by HMT indicates them, too. Let's hope it adds to demand soon.

Just listened to the QNTM CC. Internal head production is still running losses. Management indicated it sees a turnaround in desktop market in Sept/Oct of 1998 (based upon normal seasonal factor and IDC projection).
QNTM indicated that they, like SEG will rely more more on the merchant head providers in the future, especially for GMR
